CAUSE Celebrates Gay Pride: Garrin Benfield, Erika Luckett, Inka, Green and Root, and Mokai perform Acoustic Music: June 21st @ the Elbo Room in SF
by Anonymous

May 27, 2004 -- Last month, CC’s Showcase exploded with talent as Austin Willacy, David Jacobs-Strain, Mokai and Brook, played to a packed room of attentive music-lovers. The Elbo Room has recently remodeled and expanded its sound system, making it an ideal home for such a series. After several months of booking quality music, the event is taking off and becoming an established monthly scene. CAUSE is an acronym that stands for CC’s Acoustic Underground Showcase. Local music lover “CC” has hand-picked the hottest talent in the Bay Area for a series that celebrates the Acoustic Underground, a thriving scene of local songwriters and musicians who make original acoustic music. "I look for artists who have something important to say, and whose sound is unique and appealing, even to audiences that don’t usually listen to ‘singer-songwriters’," says CC. "I hear each and every artist I book live before I include them, and I usually pick the ones that move me through their music to care about issues that are important to them." The Bay Area has a rich tradition of support for progressive causes, and each month CC honors staff of different local non-profit organizations with free entry as a way to show her love for their work and help build community. The artists performing as part of CAUSE in June are listed below; each artist is performing solo except where noted. Please visit the website for more information on the artists who have performed in the past, and those scheduled for future events, photos from past months’ showcases, and links to artist websites: http://www.cause-music.com.

Garrin Benfield     http://www.garrin.com
Garrin Benfield makes modern, acoustic guitar-driven rock! Often thought of as dark and brooding, Benfield's sound is as mercurial as an ocean. His technique is rooted in the American musical styles of folk, blues and rock n' roll, all peeking through a modern texture of complex pop. Garrin is an extraordinary guitar player and composer. His reputation for technical mastery is one reason why he has been able to attract the attention of well-known artists, which include Boz Scaggs, Bonnie Raitt's bass guru "Hutch" Hutchinson and Julie Wolf of Ani DiFranco's band. He has also been invited to perform at this year’s High Sierra Music Festival, a sign of his success, and a sign that you should catch his set in SF while you can.

Erika Luckett     http://www.erikaLuckett.com
Born in Mexico and raised in Venezuela and Brazil, as a teenager Erika played the subways of France. After France, the multi-lingual Luckett made her way to the Berklee School of Music where she earned a degree in film scoring. From there she garnered an Academy Award nomination, an Emmy Award and a Newsweek Magazine "Pick of the Year" for her efforts and collaborations. She founded the world jazz ensemble Wild Mango with whom she recorded three albums and toured internationally. In 1999 she leapt into the world of solo singer/songwriters and has since established her presence across the country, performing over 150 shows a year in all 50 states and releasing three albums. Erika's music captures a delicious blend of cultures: Smoky vocals over a deeply grooving guitar is a good way to describe her sound.

Inka (performing with her band) http://www.inka-music.com
Inka’s music has been described as “open heart psychic surgery” and has folk-rock roots. Her recently released debut CD, “Name Brand Goddess” was produced by platinum selling producer and multi-instrumentalist Jon Jon, and is an unforgettable musical experience. She was recently chosen to participate in the Alice Radio “Emerging Artists” showcase, and a track from her debut CD was chosen for use on a spot the station is currently running. Her whole band will be performing as part of this month’s Acoustic Underground showcase.

Mokai     http://www.mokai-Music.com
Mokai (pronounced MO-kI) sings from a place deep in the wilderness of his soul. His daring guitar work blazes like wildfire through musical landscapes that include folk, jazz, blues and world music. Mokai writes intelligent songs that speak to your inner rebel child. Gifted with a wild imagination and a dry wit, Mokai can be serious or playful, and above all, original. His distinctive, earthy sound is rooted in traditional influences like Blind Lemon Jefferson, Big Bill Broonzy, and Dave Van Ronk, and his love of world music. His songs combine emotionally provocative lyrics and skillful rhymes with innovative fingerstyle blues guitar and an infectious groove. Performing extensively throughout the SF Bay Area acoustic music scene and festivals in Northern California, he has attracted a dedicated and growing fan base.

Green and Root     http://www.GreenAndRoot.com
Bay Area duo Green and Root perform vulnerable, honest, lyric-driven acoustic poppy folk with rich female harmonies amongst biographical pep talks and heartbreakers. On “Marrying You”--a song they also made into a video that’s a must-see for fans of the gay and lesbian weddings that became so popular in this town, years after their own – Green and Root perform a moving song about the emotional upheaval in the weeks before “the big day.” The wedding is unconventional, but the sentiments the song is built upon are exhilarating and universal. Their music arrives on the shoulders of many great influences, Joni Mitchell, Shawn Colvin and The Smiths to name a few. Root's silky harmonies add grace and depth to Green's illustrious soprano voice on songs that are honest and insightful.
